Feed the Children Mobilizes in Haiti
Posted by John on 01.18.2010 at 12:35 pm
Feed the Children, a Better World Books partner, sent us this update on their activities in Haiti:
Cash donations to the relief effort in Haiti can be made at www.feedthechildren.org or by calling 800-328-2122.
We have supplied partner agencies Operation Compassion, Children’s Hunger Fund, Lifechurch, First Haitian Church, Kingdom Resources, Reach Out America, Healing Hands International and Family Outreach Ministries with product from our distribution centers in California, New Jersey, Texas, Indiana, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Included in that cargo is sleeping bags, water, coffee, team, bags of flour and Crocs shoes. We have also purchased duffle bags and flashlights to include in the shipments. This cargo adds up to almost a million pounds of supplies that are being sent.
Office Depot, Crocs, Glory Foods and Carolina Beverage are some of our partners providing product and monetary donations to help the effort.
Our medical clinic in Carrefour suffered extensive damage, but we have been able to salvage two and a half tons of Vitameal from the facility and it has already been distributed to the people. That distribution will provide 60,000 Supplies there are running low but we are shuttling more in through the Dominican Republic. Our clinic has been in operation in Haiti since 1981 and we normally serve 7-8,000 people per month, dealing with basic medical needs and providing food. Right now, they are providing medical assistance in the streets and transporting victims to field trauma centers.

Our New Partnership with Feed The Children
Posted by John on 01.12.2010 at 5:29 pm
We are very excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Feed The Children (check out the press release). We just got things going with them in October, and already we’ve jointly provided over 300,000 children’s books to families in need!
We recently toured Feed The Children’s Elkhart, IN facility where we learned about FTC’s programs and saw the books we’ve donated in action. FTC delivers personal care shipments to families in need which include 3 boxes: a box of food items, a box of personal care items, and a box of Avon products. Since our partnership started, they’ve been including 10 children’s books in each box of personal care items.

Books for Africa’s First-Ever Shipment to Mozambique
Posted by John on 04.09.2009 at 6:00 am
What do you make possible when you shop Better World Books? These photos just came in from Mozambique where Books for Africa shipped a container-load of books funded by your purchases from Better World Books (container = those big metal boxes you see on trains and cargo ships).
The students pictured here attend the Ray of Light School where some of those books went. This container was shipped to the Baptist Convention of Mozambique. It was the first-ever shipment Books for Africa has sent to that country.

Thanks, Clark Howard!
Posted by John on 03.09.2009 at 6:54 pm
Clark Howard gave us a shout out today as a way of reading books on the cheap. Thanks, Clark! He spotted us in O, The Oprah Magazine. O had us pegged for “How to find Cheap Books Online” along with some other great options.
Who are we to argue with Clark and Oprah? They just may be onto something in a down economy – a story in a used book is just as good as the same story in a new book. ‘Course that’s a bonus above and beyond sparing the environment another printing.
It just so happens we have a couple of Clark’s books, filled with great advice on spending wisely, including Get Clark Smart: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Rich From America’s Money-Saving Expert, Clark’s Big Book of Bargains and Clark Smart Parents, Clark Smart Kids:
Teaching Kids of Every Age the Value of Money. Happy saving and reading and saving (in that order!).
