As you read last month, instead of using your Google search you can opt to use “Search Kindly” (original post). But some of you resisted saying that you prefer Yahoo search. Well intrepid Yahoo users, get on board with “GoodSearch.”

Same idea as Search Kindly, only instead of one charity per month receiving the money, you can choose your charity on the input bar underneath the search area. Books for Africa, the NCFL and Room to Read are all involved in it and can receive your virtual donations via searching right away. The ASPCA has earned $10.900 from people’s searches, so get on their, pick a literacy partner and get a-searchin’.

Sure, we all carted the little orange boxes for UNICEF to collect small change as tykes dressing up for Halloween gone trick or treating, but maybe that’s where you thought UNICEF ended (besides their sponsorship of FC Barcelona, of course). But no! For you Candian folk out there not sure what give for your holiday gift to someone, consider making a donation to UNICEF in their name. The program, entitled “Gifts of Magic” allows you to do just that and sends a wonderful package to the person in whose name you have sent the gift telling them about it (that was a mouthfull).

Check it out. (Thanks to Ana for the link!)

I personally am a Google guy. With the interconnected nature of Firefox/Camino/Safari/Internet Explorer and the famed search engine, there are many people who would likely agree with my decision. Well if Google is your engine of choice, I have a great site for you, and if it isn’t your cup of tea take a minute to consider the following:

Search Kindly

Search Kindly is a site that uses Google to search
(comes up with the exact same results, notice:

search “Better World Books is awesome” on Google
search “Better World Books is awesome” on Search Kindly

see?)

Anyway, the reason you should consider the switch is because Search Kindly donates all of the money they make off of advertising to the programs that users vote on everyday (the organization of choice changes every month). They are a non-profit “dedicated to the idea of micro-volunteerism and micro-philanthropy i.e. a lot of people doing a little is better than a few people doing a lot.”

They’re making money and sending it to some great places including Wildlife Direct, Invisible Children and Friends in Deed along with others.

Did you ever have the experience of shopping for a gift for someone and having no idea what to get them? Well, outside of buying a book from betterworld.com, (which always goes over well) I would like to suggest that you look into a subscription to GOOD Magazine. GOOD Magazine is a very worthwhile campaign that just had its kickoff this past fall. Since that time, it has raised over $225,000 for twelve different non-profits around the world. As a matter of fact, one of the organizations it supports is our very own partner, Room To Read (www.roomtoread.org)! The high-quality magazine features articles focused around environmental, social and political issues of great import here in the USA and around the world. Best of all – a year’s subscription is only $20, one hundred percent of which will be donated to one of their non-profit partners (you choose which one to support!)! Check out their website at www.goodmagazine.com and get a subscription for yourself while you’re at it! You’ll be glad you did.
