Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne South Bend received four boxes of books to distribute through the Catholic Charities Food Pantry Program and the Resource & Referral Program, which provides case management, assessments and referrals, and limited financial or material assistance. The books were also distributed to clients through the Educations Creates Hope & Opportunity Program (ECHO), which provides case management to pregnant teens to help them complete their education. This is the second donation Catholic Charities has received from Better World Books.
Catholic Charities mission is to serve those in need as Christ would have them do, with a special emphasis on those who are most vulnerable in the community: the elderly, children, migrants and the poor.
According the Catholic Charities, many of their clients are low income and have limited access to books at home. Their goal in providing books to clients is to enhance their experience when they come to Catholic Charities to receive emergency food, financial or case management services. In the course of a year, Catholic Charities will assist several thousand individuals through the Food Pantry, Resource & Referral and ECHO Programs. Catholic Charities says clients enjoy receiving the books when they visit for other services. They hope the clients and the children in the household will read the books together as a family.
