Four members of the Alpharetta team volunteered at Pinewoods Library and Learning Center in Athens, GA last month. The Better World Books team assisted with moving books from the the old library to the new library, shelving the books and breaking down and moving the old shelving units.
Pinewoods Library and Learning Center is a branch of Athens Regional Library System. Housed in a double-wide trailer in a residential mobile home park, the branch serves a neighborhood of 1000 people, mostly from Mexico. Latino immigrants from outside the neighborhood also make use of services. Most of the adults who come to the library have little or no education, and the vast majority of them are parents of young children. Pinewoods Library was a 2015 Literacy grant recipient and are in the final stages of the library project with their new space slated to open in early November.
