November 1 is National Family Literacy Day®, a day designated by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) as a way to celebrate families who are improving their lives through continued learning. When families learn together, the results are transformative and benefit everyone.
Learning should always be in process, just as Better World Books customers illustrate a passion for books and reading.
Alvin Toffler, an American writer and futurist, stated, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” Better World Books’ support of NCFL ensures we can build a country of families that continue to learn together. NCFL believes learning does not end with becoming literate. Basic literacy skills — reading, writing, and communicating — are essential but only the beginning. Continuous learning, no matter what age, is needed to successfully navigate today’s world. It is crucial for success, opportunity, and economic prosperity.
As Better World Books and NCFL work together, we involve families in education and also partner with libraries to adopt programs and strategies that provide learning opportunities for children and adults. Families of all socioeconomic levels and backgrounds face educational challenges, and likewise, all of those families hold the keys to their own success. Every parent is an asset; every family is a resource. Whether it’s obtaining a GED® credential, reading on grade level, or pursuing higher education, the results pave the way for economic self-sufficiency and propel families towards achieving their dreams and our country towards success.
