Banned Books Week: Mapping Book Challenges & Bans

featured-bannedbookweek-smEarlier this week we mentioned that the ALA monitors book challenges and bans, but did you know they also maintain an interactive Google map which you can use to browse reports of these incidents?

This map reflects the reports of challenges (“attempts to remove or restrict materials”) and bans (“actual removal of those materials”) that have been reported to the ALA from 2007 to 2011. Although, as is stated on the map page, the scope of removals such as these may be much larger in the US: “ALA recorded 348 challenges in 2010 but estimates that this reflects only 20-25% of actual incidents, as most challenges are never reported.”

If you need a little space, there’s a larger, more detailed version at maps.google.com.
