The Book That “Made” Julia Alvarez: How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents
Charitable Contributions: Alvarez is a founder of Border of Lights, which works to foster peace and solidarity between two neighbor countries, traditionally in conflict, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Fun Fact: Alvarez was born in New York but moved to the Dominican Republic with her parents as an infant. Alvarez’s parents were involved in an underground movement to overthrow the Dominican Republic’s dictatorship, which resulted in the family fleeing back to the U.S when Julia was around 10 years old.
