Love Letter to a Book (The Alternative-to-Valentine’s-Day Post)

I’ll never forget the day we met.  It was in the Classic Literature section.

I’m not one to judge a book by its cover, but yours caught my eye.  So confident and cool, so full of mystery.  Please don’t think poorly of me when I say it left much to the imagination.

The website said you were available.

You might not know this, but I asked around about you.  They told me that you were beautiful and intelligent, but that you’d broken hearts before, that you’d left some in tears.  That you had a penchant for drama.

And then you showed up on my doorstep.

I remember the time we spent together with fondness.  Late nights with all your stories, sometimes crazy ones, who said what.  Tales of crazy parties, fancy dresses, fast cars.  But there was something about the way you told them that made me fall for you.  You had all the right words.

One thing is certain: I never met another like you.

It was over too soon.  Maybe one day we’ll meet again, and rekindle an old flame.  I bet you haven’t changed a bit….

(To all the bibliophiles spending the evening with a good book: Happy Valentine’s Day.)

Kipling’s Jungle Books–I couldn’t bear to take leave of Mowgli, so I limited myself to one page a day; as time grew short, to one paragraph. Then, I began re-reading. Ultimately, I had the opening paragraph by heart. I was about 10. There would be other books to love and reread but never the delight of my first love.
