My friend Stacy recently asked for some book recommendations for her teenage daughter who loved Twilight and hasn’t found anything she’s liked as much since. I figured many moms and teens are having the same problem, so I checked in with my daughter who recommends the following 5 series. (She has read them all, in fact and likes #1 and #5 the best).
#1 – Blue Bloods Series by Melissa De La Cruz This one is Gossip Girl meets Twilight – a page turner, but a little racy. |
|
#2 – The Immortals Series by Alyson Noel Immortality – check, magic – check, teen romance – check, check…. All bases covered. |
|
#3 – House of Night Series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast In a world where humans know about and tolerate vampires – the main character Zoey is marked to become a vampire and starts her training at Hogwarts…oops no the House of Night School. So Twilight meets Harry Potter – but older and a bit racy. Pattern? Surely not. Still great angsty teen vamp fun. |
|
#4 – The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray A Victorian boarding school, a Gothic mansion, a gossipy clique of girlfriends, and a dark other-worldly fantasy. What more could you ask for? |
|
#5 – Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan About to be a movies starring Uma Thurman this one is a bit of a departure – not vamps – but Greek gods. Might not sound as compelling at first – but trust me it is! |
These should keep your teen – or let’s face it you – reading through all the planes, trains and in-laws’ houses you encounter in the next couple of weeks.
Don’t know if this is allowed but… here are a few more suggestions. (I work in a children’s bookstore but buy all my books from Better World Books) Hush Hush by Fitzpatrick is great (not a series, as far as I know, but really good). Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater is Amazing (Again, not a series, but a really wonderful read)!
I absolutely loved the Gemma Doyle series. I started reading them when I was fifteen or so, and I’m not normally a fan of YA fantasy, but Libba Bray pulled out something that could have been awful with charm and relative skill.
Laurie D’Ghent has a book that was just recently released. “Integrity” is a fiction book about a teenage girl that has been was kidnapped by the vampires and taken to a castle. Great book! Young adult readers and adults as well will love this book. It is morally acceptable for all and is a joy to read. I am starting to read it again and can’t wait for her next book in the series to come out. Real refreshing to have a clean book for teens to read. Way to go Laurie! Keep up the great work.
I totally agree with Jackie’s coment, “Integrity” is a great book, read it the first time in less than 2 days, not because is short but because I couldn’t put it down, now I am almost done with it again and waiting for the second book to come out (I read online is almost ready). I bought my copy at http://www.publishamerica.net for less than $20, and I am getting a few more for valentine’s. My 12 year old is reading it now and loving it, I am a twilight mom and now I am proud to be a Destine mom as well.
My daughter, aged 12, also stumped after finishing Twilight series, she then read House of Night series and loved them as much if not more and is now reading Night world by L J Smith, loved volume 1, desperate for vols 2 and 3
The Night World series by LJ Smith is a great series. You may want to also check out the ‘Wicked Lovely’ series by Melissa Marr. Also ‘Kissed By An Angel’ by Elizabeth Chandler.
These are some books that Im sure anyone would love, especially if they were a fan of the twilight series.
– Cassandra Clare: The mortal instruments
– L.J Smith: Night World Series, Dark Visions.
– Kelley Armstrong: Darkest Powers series
– Alyson Noel: The immortals series
– Elizabeth Chandler: Kissed by an angel
– Lisa McMann: Wake, Fade (coming soon Gone)
I loved these and couldnt put them done until i finished and now I wish there was more.
The trilogy Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen by Australian author Garth Nix. A teenage girl inherits her father’s role of sending dead spirits back into death!
I love all the suggestions, and wanted to add my own..
*Mortal Instruments – Cassandra Clare
*The Host – Stephenie Meyer – better than twilight in my opinion
*Graceling and Fire – Kristin Cashore – fantastic story!!
And if you are a fan of any of the stories mentioned by anyone above you should get the compilations books “Love is Hell”, “Prom Nights from Hell” & “Vacations From Hell” they are short stories from authors like Mrs Meyer, Libba Bray, Melissa Marr, Cassandra Clare and more.. they are quite cheap too.
Enjoy the page turning.. 🙂
Great suggestions!! I have to add a few more:
Poison Study by Maria V Snyder
Wake Series by Lisa McMann
Need by Carrie Jones
