ncfl

The National Center for Family Literacy

NCFL has helped more than a million families make educational and economic progress through family literacy programs. From their website: “It is our goal to not only provide every family with the opportunity to learn, but the ability to learn and grow together. Family literacy ensures the cycle of learning and progress passes from generation to generation.”

Why family literacy rather than just individual improvement? “Our emphasis is on family literacy for a simple reason – study after study shows that family, home and community are the true drivers of a child’s education.” (Website)

NCFL also created Wonderopolis, a resource for nurturing the love of learning in children. As we recently mentioned, Wonderopolis has a great mobile app, too.

Worldfund

Over half of Latin America’s 15-year-olds are functionally illiterate and lack minimal math and science competence. Worldfund strives for the presence of an educational system that meets the needs of the children in the region by focusing on school leadership: namely training and ongoing support for teachers and principals in underserved areas. Since their founding in 2002, they have trained more than 2,600 principals and teachers in Latin American public schools. (Website)

Room to Read

Room to Read focuses on literacy and gender equality in education, operating in Asia and Africa to encourage the habit of reading in primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with life skills needed to succeed. Over 7 million children have benefitted from Room to Read’s programs in the last decade.

Even if you’ve already heard about Room to Read, did you know they started with a vacationing Microsoft executive and about 3,000 books being carried by donkeys? (Website)

The following partners are the primary destinations for our Book for Book™ program:

Books for Africa

As the largest shipper of donated textbooks and library books to the continent, BFA’s stated mission is to end the book famine in Africa. In 2012 alone, they shipped 2.2 million books (valued at $28.3 million) to 22 African countries. To date, they’ve sent over 28 million books to 49 different countries since 1988. Better World Books is proud to be the source of millions of books and millions of dollars in funding to this organization. (Website)

Feed the Children

But why send books to Feed the Children? FTC combats hunger and poverty by addressing basic needs: “food and nutrition, water and sanitation, education and health, and livelihood community development.” Books are included in the backpacks they distribute to homeless students enrolled in public schools as part of their operations inside the U.S.—the packs also include ready-to-eat meals, school supplies, and hygienic items. These are by no means the only organizations we work with! If you are part of an organization looking for book donations, let us know at our book donations request page.

  1. Our non profit organization is working on renovating a library in McComb, MIssissippi. We have raised $13,000 so far and are in need of $10,000 more to complete our project of supplying $25,000 worth of books for this outdated middle school library. How can we apply for a library grant with Better World Books. I am looked through you website and do not see a way to make application. Thank you for helping us with Higgins Middle School.

  2. Mary, you can either apply for a LEAP Grant (this year’s application phase begins soon, and we’ll link to it here and on Facebook when it does), or even apply directly for a donation of books on our website: http://www.betterworldbooks.com/go/request-books
